Date: Saturday, 14 May 2016

Venue: Teresian Hall, SMK St. Teresa, Kuching

The annual Teachers’ Day celebration was held in the Teresian Hall and the teachers were taken on a trip to…..HAWAII!!! Prefects from the morning session put in a lot of effort in decorating the hall with paper lanterns and painting surfboards which were also used to decorate the stage. Teachers were greeted by students dressed as Hawaiian dancers as they walked down the red carpet.

The assembly held in conjunction with the celebration began at 7.45 a.m. It started with the singing of ‘Negaraku’ and ‘Ibu Pertiwiku’, and also prayers.   Edith Elspeth Joe, the head prefect, welcomed the teachers with a heartwarming speech about teachers.  After that, the principal, Puan Mary John, read the message the Perutusan Sambutan Hari Guru 2016 written  by the Minister of Education, Datuk Seri Dr Khair Bin Mohamad Yusof. She was proud to announce that the theme of Teachers’ Day celebration for the year is ‘Guru Membina Negara Bangsa’.  The teachers, led by Encik Awang and Puan Lesmy, read their pledge and sang ‘Kami Guru Malaysia’ and ‘Pendidik Bumi Kenyalang’ with so much enthusiasm.  Teachers’ Day celebration officially began with the teachers cutting a cake.  Then, the school symphonic brass band performed the song “Pirates of the Caribbean: Part 3”. The assembly ended around 8.40 a.m. with the band's rendition of the school song.

After a 25-minute break, the teachers were treated to a meal in the cookery room.  After that,  students and teachers were gathered in the hall once again for some performances put on by students for their teachers. The first performance was an acapella performance ‘Just the way you are Pitch Perfect Mashup’ by the school choir. The teachers were surprised when two ex-teresians, Olive Faith Anak Hollis and Ivy Jumba, walked onto the stage to sing ‘Kenangan Terindah’ and ‘Terima Kasih, Cikgu’. There was also a lucky draw for the teachers of SMK St. Teresa. Encik Lim, Puan Rashidah and Puan Lesmy were the lucky teachers this year. Dancers from Kelab Kebudayaan dan Tarian also performed, wowing the crowd by dancing to 2 songs. The students went wild during the special performance by the male teachers, led by Encik Sazel.

The Best-Dressed Male Teacher Award and the Best-Dressed Female Teacher Award marked the end of Teachers’ Day celebration. The prefects voted and came to a conclusion: the Best-Dressed Male Award went to Encik Teo Jin Ghee whereas the Best-Dressed Female Teacher Award went to Puan Tan Pek Huang. This year’s Teachers’ Day celebration was another successful events that the school had oganised.
