On the 23rd of April, 2016, the first ever Malaysian 2016 School Lab Finals were held at PJ Live Arts Centre, Petaling Jaya from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A total of five teams, aged between thirteen and fifteen, were chosen to compete in the finals out of 100 over teams who had entered this competition nationwide. This year, our school was fortunate to have one team comprising of myself, Rachel May and Maccollie to represent SMK. St. Teresa and Sarawak with the guidance of our wonderful teachers, Mr. Noradzahar and Mdm Lesmy. The team had earlier attended a communication workshop held in Kuala Lumpur prior to the competition on 4th of April, 2016. For the finals, the teams had to do a five-minute presentation in either English or Bahasa Malaysia on any STEM-related (that is, Science-, Technology-, Engineering- and Mathematics-related) topics in front of a live audience. They were then judged based on content, clarity, creativity and charisma.

The five teams who made it to the finals and the topics of their presentations are as follows:

 1)        Psycho Science, SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha (Sabah) with their topic "Magnetic      Levitation"

 2)        Speed C, SMK Taman Desa (Kuala Lumpur) with their topic "Sound"

 3)        N7T, SMK SANZAC (Sabah) with their topic "Symbiosis"

 4)        The Ingenious, from Sekolah Tinggi Kluang (Johor) with their topic "Salt"

 5)        St. Teresa 1, SMK St. Teresa (Sarawak) with our topic "air pressure"

All the teams did extremely well and were judged by three judges, namely Dr. Azian T.S. Abdullah, Kamarul Bahrin Haron and Dr. Wan Wardatul Amani Wan Salim. The list of winners is as follows:

First place: N7T from SMK SANZAC, Sabah

Second place: Psycho Science from SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha, Sabah

Third place: St. Teresa 1 from SMK St. Teresa, Sarawak

Fourth place: Speed C from SMK Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur

Fifth place: The Ingenious from Sekolah Tinggi Kluang, Johor

Participants of the champion team  received a gift each, a trophy for the school and RM5,000. Participants of the first runner-up received a gift each, a trophy for the school and RM3,000. We, the second runner-up, received a gift each, a trophy for the school and RM2,000. The fourth and fifth place winners received a trophy each and Popular Bookstore book vouchers.

It was a bitter sweet moment for all of us, happy to know all the winners but sad to say goodbye to all the new friends we made along the way as we would part that day. The day ended with a photography session with all the winners and all of us congratulating each other. What a wonderful experience indeed!

Love and Serve,

Charlotte Patrick.
